Real Sociedad have confirmed that a fan has died after becoming unwell ahead of Wednesday night’s La Liga clash with Real Mallorca. The fan had reportedly received medical assistance at the Reale Arena stadium before being transferred to a health centre.
“We regret the death of the txuri urdin member who was evacuated before the start of today’s meeting,” read a statement on the Real Sociedad Twitter page. “Today’s victory is for you.”
The start of Wednesday’s game was delayed for around 15 minutes as medical personnel attended to the fan in the stands, with players from both sides being told to return to the dressing room while the fan was being treated, according to ESPN.
La Real reportedly told supporters at the time: “The clash has been delayed a few minutes because a fan has had to be treated by medical assistance.” And, according to Spanish publication El Pais, the fan then passed away at the health centre.

La Real honoured the gentleman as captain Mikel Oyarzabal delivered a bouquet of flowers to his relatives ahead of his side’s match with Villarreal. The club also observed an emotional minute of silence in memory of the supporter and former academy player Unai Arruabarrena, who had also passed away.
The San Sebastian side have been in scintillating form on the pitch this season and are currently third in the La Liga table after winning seven of their first 10 games. Their only defeats of the campaign have come against Barcelona and Getafe, while they picked-up a valuable draw against Atletico Madrid.
They have also impressed in the Europa League and are top of Group E after winning all four of their matches. Last month, the team beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford, with Brais Mendez scoring the only goal of the game from the penalty spot. The Red Devils are set to travel to the Reale Arena for their final group match of the competition in early November.
