FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been tipped to take a “good stance” after Red Bull were accused of breaching budget cap rules. Former driver Paul di Resta has predicted Ben Sulayem would “need” to stamp his authority to clear up the situation, which has caused a storm in the paddock.
Di Resta stresses it could be ”horrible” for F1 if Max Verstappen is stripped of last season’s world title. Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Di Resta said: “It would be horrible if it did. I hope for the good of the sport nobody has broken it in the sense that it’s too far and you think like that because Formula One is in such a good place.
“But Mohammed (Ben Sulayem) will want to make a good stance as well. His new role being the President, taking on F1, that’s what it’s about and he will need to do that. But when you’ve got external people trying to influence where it is. The FIA have got the system they’ve got to go through and they have to follow whatever they set.”
Auto Motor und Sport claims Red Bull may have breached the budget cap by as much as £9million ($10mil). This would tip them over the five per cent allowed by the FIA for a minor violation.

“The information will come out but its news up and down the paddock. It’s certainly gathered momentum because of the result last year.” Red Bull have denied any wrongdoing, claiming yesterday the reports were just “speculation”.
It is understood Mercedes and Ferrari are pushing for Red Bull to be hit with the tough penalty to set a precedent. However, Christian Horner has bit back at Toto Wolff and Mattia Binotto for getting involved.
He commented: “I just reiterate, what is totally unacceptable is for teams that are not party to any form of the submission to be making claims about our submission, about perspective penalties. It’s just bang out of order. Perhaps, when these accusations are made, people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.”
