The European Commission President will deliver her speech to the European Parliament this morning at 8am BST (9am Central European Time). The speech is a chance for Ms von der Leyen to reflect on the EU’s efforts over the past year to combat the pandemic and a litany of other issues. She is also expected to chart a recovery path for the bloc and attempt to rally the nations together.

As is customary, MEPs will be given the opportunity to voice their opinion on both the Commission’s work so far and its plan for the year ahead.

After a slow vaccine rollout, she is expected to receive a hostile reception from many MEPs who feel bitter and let down by the EU.

Digital transformation and the environment are expected to be two of the key issues discussed in Strasbourg this morning as she lays out her vision for the EU’s future.

The €807billion Covid recovery package will also feature prominently and likely be a point of scrutiny for the MEPs.
