Emma Thompson, 62, compares her underwear to a ‘ship’s rigging’ and jokes she had ‘people hauling on ropes’ to get her into it on the set of Cruella due to elaborate costume

Emma Thompson has compared her underwear to a ‘ship’s rigging’ and joked she had ‘people hauling on ropes’ to get her into it on the set of Cruella.

The actress, 62, who plays Baroness von Hellman in the upcoming movie alongside Emma Stone, said the undergarment element of her elaborate costume also left her struggling to go to the toilet.

She told The Sun: ‘My underwear was like a sort of ship’s rigging. I mean, there were people hauling on ropes.

‘It was a lot. So peeing was hard and involved a team of people.

‘The underwear was a big old deal. Not for la Stone, obviously, because she’s slender as a lily and didn’t need to wear a corset like a frigging whalebone aria.’

The film is a prequel to Disney’s 101 Dalmatians and follows a young Estella de Vil, an aspiring fashion designer in 1970s London.

In the film, the Baroness keeps her slim figure by only eating small cubes of cucumber rather than substantial meals.

Emma said of the character trait: ‘One of the things I really enjoyed hating about her was the fact that she didn’t eat.

‘I don’t trust people who don’t eat. There, I’ve said it.’

Emma – who has been married to actor Greg Wise, 55, for 18 years – said she drew on her own life experiences for inspiration in the role.

She added that she has spent so many years of her acting career playing ‘good women in frocks’ and now she is happy she gets to play ‘evil woman in frocks.’

‘It’s pretty trippy. It’s wild,’ she said of her role before adding she walks around set thinking ‘this is bananas.’
