Emma Raducanu has reacted to her historic US Open title win. The 18-year-old has become the first qualifier in history to win a Grand Slam title, and the first British woman in 44 years to lift a Major trophy. The world No 150 will now rise to the top 25 in the rankings and picks up a prize money cheque for USD$2.5m (£1.8m).

Raducanu wrote her name in the history books, becoming the first-ever qualifier to make a Grand Slam final, let alone win one.

The 18-year-old was ranked down at No 150 in the world ahead of the tournament, coming through three rounds of qualifying to make the main-draw,

She failed to drop a set throughout all ten matches across the main-draw and qualifying rounds, becoming the first female British Major champion in 44 years and the first British woman to win the US Open in 53 years.

The newly-crowned Grand Slam champion was also handed a USD$2,500,000 prize money cheque, having previously won USH $303,376 throughout her career, and reacted to her victory during the trophy ceremony.

The 18-year-old took the opportunity to congratulate her fellow teenage opponent Fernandez during her victory speech, saying: “First of all, I really want to congratulate Leylah and her team, she played some incredible tennis and has beaten some of the top players in the world.

“The level was extremely high and I hope we play each other in many more tournaments and hopefully finals.”

She also thanked her supporters both back home and in the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd,

“As for this three weeks in New York, I would say having such a supportive team, the LTA my agent, and everyone back home watching on TV, thank you so much for your support over the years,” the champion said.

“Thank you for making me feel so at home from my first qualifying match, you have spurred me on in some difficult moments and I hope me and Leylah put on a good match today.”
