‘Don’t waste your money’ on designer skincare – £12.95 serum to rival Dior

Skincare routines are a hot topic online at the moment, promising to leave glowing results and even help people to look younger. When it comes to choosing the right products, however, a beauty and skincare expert has said that designer brands aren’t always the best.

Scott McGlynn, a beauty and skincare influencer and the host and creator of Celebrity Skin Talk and Acne Uncovered, claims to have found an affordable serum dupe that can give Dior’s Super Potent Serum a run for its money.

In a video posted to his Instagram page, Scott tested out the designer and high-street serums to determine which left his skin feeling better.

Scott said: “I had to see how good Dior skincare is and here are my thoughts.

“I have got a Dior serum vs Skin Proud [Bright Boost] serum. So this Dior one starts from £64 for 30ml, which I am using in this video, but it does range up to £100 depending on what size you get. That’s one side of the face with Dior. Then I’m going in with Skin Proud which retails at £12.95 and I’m going to apply to the other side of the face.”

Scott rubbed the same amount of each serum into opposite sides of his face and discussed how they felt on his skin. He said: “I really thought [the Skin Proud] one went a lot further than the Dior one and it just sunk in very quickly and very easily. So Skin Proud is definitely the one for me.”

Scott went on to trial the Dor serum against some of the other serums in his collection and added: “Dior did not win so don’t waste your money.”

Skin Proud products can be purchased at ASOS and Beauty Bay, as well as in-store at Boots. The Proud Bright Boost serum Skin Proud Bright Boost two percent Vitamin C Serum comes in a 25ml bottle and promises “glory” results. The product is both vegan and cruelty-free, and is designed to “give your skin a boost of brightness”.

Beauty Bay describes the serum as being “lightweight” and “packed full of vitamins, kakadu plum and lemon extract.” The serum should be used daily as part of your regular skincare routine.

How to incorporate a serum into your skincare routine

A serum should be used in your daily skincare routine after you have washed and cleansed your skin.

Serums can serve an array of purposes, so it is important you understand the specific serum you are using. Make sure to read the instructions before application, and if it is a new addition to your skincare routine, test on a small patch of skin first to ensure no irritation occurs.

In general, less tends to be more when it comes to serums, though the specific amount you need will depend on the product and your skin type.

As serums tend to contain a lot of ingredients, if you use too much serum, you may find your skin become irritated or the product does not absorb very well. The standard application tends to be two pumps or a pea-sized amount.

For serums which come with a dropper, anywhere from two to four drops will work.

Using your fingertips, gently apply the serum to your face and neck. Lightly tap or smooth the serum across the surface of your skin.

Alternatively, apply two pumps or up to four drops of serum to the palm of your hands. Rub your palms together to warm and activate the serum, and then apply it to your face.

Lightly press the palm onto your skin or pat the serum outwards and upwards across your face and neck. Allow the serum up to five minutes to soak in before continuing with the rest of your skincare routine.
