Former BBC Director-General Lord Hall has faced a grilling by MPs over the report into Martin Bashir’s controversial interview with Princess Diana for BBC Panorama in 1995. Lord Hall was pressed by MP Steve Brine on whether the awarding of the interview to Mr Bashir raised “alarm bells” at the time, adding that it seemed “incredible” more questions had not been asked over how the interview had been sourced.

Mr Brine asked the former Director-General of the BBC: “I was once a very junior reporter at the BBC I left before I become anything more.

“But immediately after this interview questions were raised over about the way in which Mr Bashir has secured the interview.

“And I just wonder did it not raise any alarms bells when the scoop of the century which this undoubtedly was awarded to a very junior reporter at the time?”

He added: “Did it not raise any alarm bells at all as to how he managed to secure it, it seems incredible not!?”
