A newborn baby has been found dead in a garden this morning.

A distraught homeowner discovered the tot in their garden in New South Wales, Australia, at around 7am local time.

Police have been unable to confirm the gender of the child or determine when exactly it was born.

They are now trying to find the mother after what a spokesman called the “heartbreaking discovery”.

“It’s very difficult to answer that at the moment,” Newcastle City District Commander Brett Greentree said. “This will be a matter for the coroner.

“There will be a post-mortem examination which will obviously provide us a lot more information with respect to the sex of the child, and how that child may have passed away.

Brett Greentree, who is Newcastle City District Commander, spoke to the reporters about the grave situation

“At the moment we have very serious and grave concerns for the mother who may need medical assistance, and we’re doing our absolute best to try and identify the female.”

The desperate search for the mum is ongoing and police hope to provide her any medical treatment she may need.

“Surely somebody will have some idea and be able to assist us,” the officer added.

“It is just really a heartbreaking situation, it’s very very sad, and we’re hoping that between the investigations and the community we’ll be able to identify this female and, first and foremost, make sure she has medical treatment.

The baby was found in a garden in a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales

“Certainly the occupant of that house — we’re putting support around that occupant and the police.”

This person is assisting with the investigation and the investigation continues.
