‘Dead in two days!’ Gardeners share ‘fail safe’ 30p method for banishing weeds from paving

Garden weeds may seem harmless but they can actually reduce the yield of some crops by up to 50 percent. Weeds can also harbour pests and diseases which can then spread to gardeners’ most prized plants. Furthermore, once weeds set seed they can spread and return year after year. To stop weeds from competing with other plants and crops, gardeners should remove them.

Luckily, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, whose full name is Sophie Hinchliffe, have shared their simple solution for getting rid of weeds.

The cleaning and lifestyle influencer has more than 4.5 million followers on Instagram and often shares her garden and home tips online.

Fans of hers have taken to social media in recent years to share their own hacks for solving common household problems.

On one such group, Facebook user Sue Wright asked: “Best way of getting rid of weeds between pavement slabs? Sick of industrial cleaner, they grow back so soon.

“I’ve heard of vinegar and boiling water, really does this actually work? Just thought I’d ask and see what you people recommend. Thank you.”

The post was inundated with more than 200 comments from Mrs Hinch fans and the most popular response was to use salt.

Sharon Gail replied: “Salt. I also use it on my artificial grass. It’s cheap and it works. When the weeds dry up I just brush them off the grass. It only takes a few days to kill everything.”

James Cook replied: “Salt will kill them and not harm wildlife or pets.”

Gillian Bellard wrote: “Salt kills everything. Cheap way to buy a bag of cooking salt.”

Helen Swainston suggested: “Pour salt on weeds then boiling water. Dead in two days, fail safe.”

Beth Ballantyne wrote: “I use salt down all the spaces in hot weather in dry weather so when it’s damp/rains they drink it up and die. My brother swears by Domestos bleach poured when weeds are just coming through. Hope this helps.”

Judith Robson replied: “I put salt down and within a couple of days the weeds had died and I just had to brush them away.”

Lhea Wibrow said: “Cheap salt in between the slabs every few weeks. Keeps them away and kills them if they are already there.”

Salt can be found in most households but for those who don’t have it, it can be bought from most local supermarkets relatively cheaply.

Asda Table Salt costs 30p and Essential Table Salt costs 90p from Waitrose.

Other suggestions from Mrs Hinch fans included using white vinegar, boiling water, dish soap and bleach.

Julie Barnes said: “White vinegar and a little washing up liquid. Works well my weeds don’t grow back. Block paving as well.”

Kate Storey replied: “I put salt and boiling water. It really works.”

Deborah Morrell commented: “Salt, dish soap and white vinegar all in a bottle.”
