Sir David Jason was forced to walk on his hands and knees after collapsing to the ground as he dealt with the crippling effects of coronavirus. The Only Fools and Horses star explained his plight during an interview with Jon Kay on BBC Breakfast .

The comedy legend explained how not long after that time he was struggling with covid.

When asked by Jon Kay how he has coped over the last two years, Sir David replied: “For a time there I was fine.

“Then a couple or three months ago, I went to the Fairford airshow and I caught the dreaded covid and did I get it bad – I got it seriously bad.”

The Del Boy actor added: “I got out of the bed in the early hours, to make a visit and because all my muscles were not working I collapsed and my arms wouldn’t work and my legs wouldn’t work.

“So being a very creative and inventive person as what I am, I thought ‘how will I get from here to the door?'”

“You know when you see the Walruses you see David Attenborough, how they walk or crawl on land, in order to do that I needed to use my head.

In an amusing tale he explained how he had to “drag his head to the door”, which unfortunately left the Open All Hours actor with carpet burns.

Sir David jokingly reflected how he was: “The first person to have covid and carpet burns at the same time.”

However, the star joked he was left disappointed at the occasion, with the pageantry not up to his standards.

He explained in May this year: “You expect that when she [the Queen] places the sword upon your shoulders she says, ‘You go on your knees as David Jason and you arise as Sir David Jason.’

“And the sword is placed on either of your shoulders, ‘Arise, Sir David Jason.’ And that is the moment of extreme pleasure and the biggest and best thing that has ever happened to you in your entire life.

“But unfortunately, I was expecting this and I’m there on one knee, pausing as the Queen takes her sword up and goes ‘dum dum’. ‘Right, there you are.’

“And I was, ‘Where’s the bit about ‘Arise Sir David’ and all that?’, and that didn’t come, so I was disappointed!”

The star has always been a huge admirer of the Royal Family and particularly the Queen.

“How many people that age do you know that could do anywhere near what was expected of her,” he remarked.

BBC Breakfast airs on BBC One daily from 6am.
