Crocodile Dundee's Paul Hogan reveals how fight with Clyde Packer nearly cost him his career

‘I’m about to thump the guy that owns the whole network’: Crocodile Dundee’s Paul Hogan reveals how a punch-up with Kerry Packer’s brother almost RUINED his career

Crocodile Dundee star Paul Hogan has enjoyed almost five decades of fame.

But the 81-year-old has admitted his career almost flopped at the beginning, thanks to a regrettable punch-up with the late Nine Network boss Clyde Packer.

Paul recounts the tale in an extract from his upcoming memoir Tap-Dancing Knife Thrower: My Life Without The Boring Bits, as published by The Daily Telegraph on Sunday.

The incident took place in the 1970s during a meeting with Paul, his producer John ‘Strop’ Cornell and Clyde, the brother of media mogul Kerry Packer.

In the book extract, Paul explains that he and John were ‘summoned’ to the meeting to discuss the fact that they had gone over budget while producing The Paul Hogan Show for Channel Nine.

However, things quickly spiralled out of control.

Tensions rose between Clyde and John, prompting Paul to physically intervene.

‘I rushed in real close to Clyde, thinking to myself, I’m just getting started in my new career on television and here I am about to thump the guy that owns the whole network,’ Paul said.

‘Before I could throw a punch, John grabbed Clyde by the shirt front and dragged him right across the room and shoved him hard against the wall.’

Unsurprisingly, the encounter marked the end of John’s involvement with Channel Nine.

While Clyde assured Paul his job was still in tact, the star decided to follow John and willingly depart Nine out of loyalty to his friend.
