Covid cases in UK rocket to highest daily level in two months as 140 deaths reported

    Government data showed 38,281 new cases and 140 new deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test recorded on Thursday. It marks the highest level of new infections since July 22, where 39,315 cases and 84 deaths were recorded.  

    The new figures mean the UK has recorded a total of 6,628,709 cases and 132,143 deaths.

    Cases have risen in all English regions except London and Yorkshire & the Humber, according to Public Health England’s (PHE) latest weekly surveillance report. 

    London has the lowest rate of coronavirus infections in England at 247.3 coronavirus cases per 100,000 people. 

    Southwest England has the highest rate with 481.7 cases per 100,000 in the seven days to August 22.
