At an elevation of 1,131ft, ‘Edge’ – on the 100th floor of New York’s supertall ’30 Hudson Yards’ skyscraper – is the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere.
And it has a glass floor.
But now visitors are being offered an even more intense experience at the top of the tower – the chance to climb above Edge to the summit and hang out over the side, 1,271ft (387m) above the ground.

Billed as the highest external building climb in the world, the exhilarating experience is called ‘City Climb’.
It’s not quite open yet, but the tower filmed volunteers trying it out for a sweaty-palm-inducing promotional video clip. In the footage, we see them clambering up the side of the skyscraper via a vertiginous staircase then leaning back – while firmly harnessed – right out over the side of the dizzying structure.
Members of the public will be able to follow in their footsteps from November 9.
Before making the nail-biting ascent, they will undergo a ‘comprehensive safety briefing’ and have ‘specially designed’ safety harnesses fitted.

City Climb guides will then secure them into the climbing route using two cables attached to a trolley, which will ‘seamlessly move with the climber throughout the entire journey’.
Then the adventure begins and ‘unparalleled views of New York City’ are unveiled.
Climbers first ascend 32 steps to a small viewing platform 1,190 feet up. From there, they climb ‘The Stair’ – a 161-step staircase built into the side of the skyscraper that’s at a calf-burning 45-degree incline.
The real adrenalin rush awaits at the top of the staircase. Guests advance to ‘The Apex’, the platform at the very peak of the tower. There, they’ll have the chance to lean out and dangle over the platform, the Big Apple skyline stretching out behind them.
After completing the climb, visitors can do a ‘victory lap’ of Edge – taking in more staggering views from 1,131ft (345m) in the air through the glass floor and walls, and from the observation deck’s ‘skyline steps’.
A glass of Champagne is also on the agenda for a toast of the experience.

Edge opened to thrill-seeking visitors in March 2020. The triangular viewing platform extends out 65 feet from 30 Hudson Yards – the sixth-tallest skyscraper in Manhattan.
Above Edge, on the 101st floor, is ‘Peak’, a restaurant, bar, café and event space.
The 30 Hudson Yards tower is located in Hudson Yards, a complex of high-rises on Manhattan’s West Side with luxury commercial and residential space.
Tickets for the City Climb experience are £136 ($185) and include entry to Edge and a digital Edge image
Guests making the inaugural climb next week will receive a personalized video from their climb and a commemorative medal
Jeff T Blau, Chief Executive of Related Companies – which is one of the developers behind Hudson Yards – says: ‘City Climb quite literally shouts from the rooftops that tourism is back in New York City and there has never been a more exciting time to visit.
‘This is an adventure unlike anything the City has seen before, and we are thrilled to welcome the world to an experience of a lifetime.’
Michael Gilbane, Senior Vice President of Related Companies, adds: ‘The architectural details in New York City’s buildings make our skyline one of the most instantly recognizable in the world, but until now the views from these iconic capstones have been reserved for cinematic superheroes.
