Boris Johnson could be set for an unlikely return to frontline politics after a stunning poll saw him top a list of Conservative Party candidates in an election showdown against Keir Starmer. A fresh Opinium poll, carried out for the ITV Peston programme, has dealt another significant blow to Liz Truss’ crisis-hit tenure as Prime Minister. Ms Truss is clinging onto power in No10 ahead of a crunch meeting of the 1922 Committee.

Earlier on Thursday, Sheryll Murray became the 11th Conservative MP to call for Liz Truss to stand down and says she has submitted a letter of no confidence to the Chairman of the 1922 Committee Sir Graham Brady.

Speaking on the Peston last night, ITV’s deputy political editor Anushka Asthana revealed that more than 30 percent of the general population did not know the best Conservative successor to Ms Truss if she resigned.

This signals potential infighting among the Tories, as MPs plot to remove Ms Truss from Downing Street.

Among the general population, most of the leading names “barely make a dent” with Suella Braverman, Ben Wallace, Jeremy Hunt and Penny Mordaunt all below 10 percent among voters.

Ms Asthana continued: “There are two big contenders here.

“In the eyes of the general public, Rishi Sunak is in the lead with around 25 percent support.

“But the winner among Tory voters, quite clearly, is Boris Johnson with over 30 percent among Conservatives.

“As for head to heads, Keir Starmer beats them all but Boris Johnson does best with 30 percent support, followed by Rishi Sunak on 27 percent support.”
