Celebrity facialist Melanie Grant shares her go-to diet and day on a plate


What a celebrity facialist eats for perfect skin: Expert shares her go-to morning smoothie recipe – and the diet she swears by for a luminous complexion

Smoothies filled with creamy avocado, salmon and bone broth are just three of the foods that the celebrity facialist Melanie Grant relies on for perfect skin.

The Australian expert – who counts the likes of Victoria Beckham, model Georgia Fowler and Kim Kardashian as loyal clients – said what you put into your body is just as important as what you apply topically.

‘Diet is everything when it comes to good skin. I try to follow an anti-inflammatory diet. I’m not a nutritionist, but I think it works really well for me,’ Melanie explained on her website.

What does Melanie’s day on a plate look like?

* PRE BREAKFAST: One cup of warm water and 500mL of room temperature alkaline water.

* BREAKFAST: Smoothie and a coffee with almond milk.

* LUNCH: Wild salmon fillet with brown rice and avocado.

* SNACKS: Nuts, peppermint and English breakfast tea.

* DINNER: Chicken or fish with vegetables of salad.

* DESSERT: Square or two of dark chocolate and/or a glass of organic red wine. 

This means that she tries to avoid gluten, wheat dairy and any refined sugars.

Posting on Instagram, Melanie revealed she starts every morning with a vitamin-packed smoothie.

‘My morning smoothie has spinach or kale (I prefer frozen or baby spinach if fresh), frozen wild blueberries (wild are higher in antioxidants), an entire blueberry (this helps to keep me full all day) and two tablespoons of Vida Glow un-flavoured marine collagen powder,’ she said. 

Melanie then adds a dash of pea protein powder, whole flax seeds and whole hemp seeds. 

She finishes the mix with water and plenty of ice to make sure it’s refreshing. 

Melanie said she typically has a smoothie every morning for breakfast, along with a cup of hot water, 500mL of ‘room temperature alkaline water’ and a coffee with almond milk.

‘I try to make my own almond milk sometimes, but next best is Nutty Bruce. It goes well with coffee and doesn’t have all of the added sugars,’ she said.

Melanie added that it’s always important to read the label when buying anything, as often even something as aesthetically healthy as almond milk can be packed with sugar.

The facialist said she has the ‘same lunch every day’: a salmon fillet, brown rice and half of another avocado. 

‘I don’t like farmed salmon, I order wild Canadian salmon online and get it delivered to my favourite cafe,’ she said.

‘They poach me a small piece and I’ll either have it with brown rice or half an avocado.’

Melanie said she ‘never’ eats salads during the day as is often rushing around between clients and they take too long to eat, but she makes sure to keep her energy levels up by snacking on activated nuts throughout the day.

During the afternoon, Melanie drinks plenty of peppermint and English breakfast tea, before she has either chicken or fish with salad or vegetables in the evening.

‘I try and put bone broth into almost everything that I cook, it’s so good for you!’ she said.

Bone broth is made by simmering the bones and connective tissue of animals. It is a highly nutritious stock often used in soups and sauces. 

Melanie also tries to slow cook most of her meals in the morning as it’s easier and means she’s not rushing around starving when she gets home.  

Finally, Melanie adds an assortment of supplements to her diet including fish oil and pro and prebiotics. 

She also treats herself to a little of what she loves, like dark chocolate and the odd glass of red wine – which is filled with antioxidants.
