Ben Fordham's 2GB radio audience continues to slide

Ben Fordham won the latest round of Sydney breakfast radio ratings – but it wasn’t all good news for the 2GB star. 

The 44-year-old broadcaster dropped two percentage points as his talkback show registered a 13.5 per cent share of the overall market.

ABC Sydney closed the gap on Fordham’s show with a share of 13.1 per cent.

Fordham’s station 2GB, meanwhile, dropped 1.7 points across all time slots.

‘There’s some tough competition out there and I’ve just got to do my best to stay in front of them all,’ Fordham told The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday. 

Elsewhere in the breakfast market, KIIS FM duo Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson gained ground for a 12.9 per cent total share – their highest ever.

On the other end of the spectrum, 2Day FM’s Morning Crew – hosted by Erin Molan, Dave Hughes and Ed Kavalee – fell by 0.5 per cent to a 3.3 per cent market share.

The latest radio survey comes after Sophie Delezio thanked Fordham for inspiring her to start a career in journalism.

Sophie – who was just two years old when she was left with horrific burns after becoming trapped under a burning car which collided into a Sydney daycare centre in 2003 – will be a regular contributor to Body + Soul magazine from this weekend. 

Sophie admitted she probably never would have thought about entering journalism had it not been for the 2GB radio host. 

Fordham first met Sophie when he reported on her devastating accident as a child and the pair struck up a friendship that lasted through the years.

Fordham revealed that he thought Sophie would be the perfect fit for journalism based on her warm personality and friendly magnetism.

He admitted he found himself letting his guard down and ‘spilling’ all his secrets to his friend on several occasions.

‘She’s got a gift – a wonderful skill when it comes to communicating, and being able to understand the difficulties that people go through,’ he said.

Mr Fordham introduced Ms Delezio to the team at Body + Soul and said she quickly won over the editorial staff.

‘I’m honoured to call her a friend,’ he said. ‘She’s such a special human being, with a warm, generous and inquisitive soul – you feel comfortable in her company, which makes her perfect for this job.’
