A man was found dead after he became locked inside a walk-in freezer overnight, according to police. Mahamadou Dansogo, 33, was discovered the morning after he began cleaning inside the freezer, which has been likened to a meat locker by a police source.
The popular Beigel’s Bakery in the heart of Brooklyn, New York was taped off from Thursday morning at 8.40am (12.40pm UK time).
The NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit, the fire department and the medical examiner all worked to free Mr Dansogo’s body from the equipment.
New York Police Department do not believe any criminality was involved in the tragic incident.
He had no visible trauma to his body, officers said.
Their investigation is ongoing.
Mr Dansogo, a father-of-five, started working at the bakery only month before the incident.
He worked the night shift at Beigel’s Bakery, arriving at work around 3am local time, according to a NYPD spokesman.
His uncle, Tidiane Wague, told reporters: “This guy just come to the United States.”
He added: “He tries to do like everybody else, to have a better life. He loves his job, he comes to work every day.”
David Greenberger, Beigel’s bakery’s manager, made a statement to local broadcasters.
He said: “We are devastated by the loss of our employee in this accident.
“The family has been notified and we extended our deepest condolences to them.
“Grief counsellors are on the site to provide counselling and support to the family and to our employees.
“This is an ongoing situation and we are cooperating with all investigations.
“We have no further comment at this time.”
A police source said the freezer is similar to a meat locker.
“I’m not sure how long you can survive in one of those,” they told the New York Post.
Beigel’s Bakery was founded in the owners’ hometown of Krakow, Poland, in 1934.
In 1949, the Beigel family moved to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and introduced their staple black and white cookies.
In the 1950s they outgrew the Lower East Side facility and moved to new quarters in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, before moving to Clinton Hill, downtown Brooklyn in the 2000s.
