Presenter Afua Adom joined Julia Hartley-Brewer on her talkRADIO breakfast show with Reform Party UK leader Richard Tice to discuss a campaign that urges children to sing patriotic songs and clap for carers this Friday. The song, written and performed by children, was played on-air as Richard Tice welcomed the campaign as pupils would be waving Union Jacks and smiling. But Afua Adom was less than impressed and gave her hilarious verdict on the tune.
Speaking on TalkRADIO, Ms Hartley-Brewer brought up One Britain, One Nation (OBON) day which the Department of Education has backed.
Former police officer and CEO of OBON Kash Singh wants the campaign to bring together all British communities through celebration and song.
The OBON website says it wants “to create a strong, fair, harmonious and a proud British Nation – celebrating patriotism and respect for all our people”.
Ms Hartley-Brewer played a clip of the song which says in its lyrics: “We are Britain and we have one dream, to unite all people in one great team.”
Mr Tice reacted to the song and said: “I think the greatest thing Julia is that you’ve got lots of Union Jacks everywhere, we’ve got children in the same place.
“They’re laughing, they’re smiling and guess what they’re singing!”
The radio host quipped whether or not the pupils would be allowed to do that considering the current lockdown measures put in place.
Ms Adom was then asked her opinion on the song.
The music video features a selection of primary school children singing the song and waving patriotic flags with the OBON logo on them.
It is unknown how many schools have signed up for the event but the campaign has the backing of Actress Joana Lumley and Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis.
Education Secretary Gavin Williamson also discussed the campaign in the House of Commons.
The campaign will also see children taking part in a one-minute clap for essential workers at 10am.
