Strictly Come Dancing’s first live show of the year kicked off in phenomenal style, with the professionals putting on a show full of colour to a disco classics soundtrack. The jubilant mood in the ballroom clearly affected Craig Revel Horwood, and Anton Du Beke voiced his concern over his sudden shift in personality.

James Bye started his Strictly journey with a rock and roll themed jive with his partner Amy Dowden.

However, the EastEnders star had the misfortune of suffering with first night nerves and froze during his first performance.

When analysing the routine, it was surprisingly Craig who leapt to the defence of the actor, much to the confusion of fellow judge Anton Du Beke.

After Craig generously awarded James a six, Anton remarked “I’m concerned about Craig, its a six.”

The comments followed Craig’s positive spin of James’ first dance despite his pantomime villain reputation.

Craig remarked: ” I think your upper body needs work, all the steps were there – sometimes.”

He added: “But, they need to be danced with a little more ease I think, that’s what Shirley means with the breathing.”

The flamboyant judge then declared: “But, I think you did a really, really great job.”

Despite James’ errors, Anton also praised his performance, saying: “I liked it, I thought it was a good number.”

“If you’re going to go completely wrong, just stand still, stand completely still, pick it up eventually, and it looks like choreography!”

Motsi Mabuse also had reason for James to be optimistic for future shows.

She added: “Don’t lose your confidence when you make a mistake, it happens to all of us. We fake it, I tell you we fake it, even the hair, so you keep going and pushing – I think we have a lot to see from you.”

The hopeful class of 2022 were all announced on Friday’s long-awaited launch show, which included four new professional dancers.

Lauren Oakley, Vito Coppola, Carlos Gu, and Michelle Tsiakkas have all joined the BBC showpiece with the hopes of battling it out for the Glitterball trophy.

Vito and Carlos were coupled with Fleur East and Molly Rainsford respectively, but Michelle and Lauren missed out on pairing up with a celebrity this year.

Despite joining the show, they joined Neil Jones, Cameron Lombard, and Luba Mushtuk in missing out on being paired with one of the 15 celebrities.

One of the newcomers made a very lasting impression on a blushing Claudia Winkleman.

Carlos introduced the presenter to a steamy one-on-one dance while sitting on the sofas during the launch.

The Chinese national dance champion was quizzed on his favourite dance, “Why the Rumba? That’s just like standing”, Claudia cheekily declared.

When Carlos gazed into her eyes, while sensually rubbing her arms, the presenter howled: “I’m pregnant”, before admitting: “I’ve got it wrong about the Rumba, it’s obviously not just standing!”

Strictly Come Dancing airs every Saturday on BBC One.
