Conservative commentator Benedict Spence argue the Government could be considering a winter coronavirus lockdown. Speaking to TalkRadio, he said news of the Government scrapping vaccine passports is welcome. However, he fears it may be followed by introduction of another – albeit brief – lockdown in the winter in order to deal with rising Covid cases.
Mr Spence said: “I think vaccine passports is the thing that is going to capture people’s imagination because it is a very unpopular policy.
“We are hearing today that this was in the Times and now Sajid Javid is on the media rounds and has said that vaccine passports are not going to go ahead.
“Cue the celebrations and happiness but the problem is the coronavirus laws are already going to be extended for another six months.
“So it is not as if the Government doesn’t have the power to shut us all in again.”

Mr Spence then reflected on the possibility of a brief and short lockdown over the winter period.
He opined: “We were already hearing briefings about there being talks about there maybe having to be another shorter lockdown maybe later this winter.
“I wouldn’t be getting too excited just yet.
“This is my big fear that the vaccine passport thing has been shelved to get a little bit of political goodwill from the public.
“We’ve looked at it properly and whilst we should keep it in reserve as a potential option, I’m pleased to say that we will not be going ahead with plans for vaccine passports.”
Later on in the morning while speaking on Times Radio, he added: “It’s not a wobble. We said we were going to look at this and look at it carefully.
“We set out what those plans were and the sectors that we were looking at.”
