The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are starting to take a more traditional approach to summer holidays, having just spent a week in the Isles of Scilly, off the coast of Cornwall. This marks the second year in a row they have chosen to visit the UK summer hotspot. Commenting on the choice of holiday destination, royal expert Katie Nicholl said the move signals a return to tradition.
She said: “While in the past we’ve seen the couple enjoy more lavish holidays skiing or visiting sunnier climates, they’ve been adopting a more traditional royal approach and spending their time at royal residences in the UK instead.”
Ms Nicholl acknowledged that while the UK staycation could be due to the Covid pandemic, the move also signals the couple could be preparing for their future roles as King and Queen.
She added: “This could obviously be the result of Covid travel restrictions but I also believe that Kate and William are transforming into the future King and Queen and therefore are adopting more traditional practices.”
Kate and William took their three children, Prince George, eight, Princess Charlotte, six, and Prince Louis, three, to the Isles of Scilly last month, according to Hello! magazine.
Last year the Cambridge family holidayed in the archipelago, as they feared any changes to travel restrictions and quarantine requirements could impact on their work.
During their 2020 break they were spotted cycling around Tresco Island, the only one of the five inhabited islands that is privately-owned.
It is not known what the family-of-five got up to this year, though we’re sure beach trips were on the agenda.
The Cornish islands are renowned for their picturesque sandy beaches and clear blue water.

Kate and William are also understood to have taken the children for a quick staycation in Tresco last October, during the school holidays.
A holidaymaker who saw the royals told The Sun: “We hardly noticed at first as they seemed a normal family on holiday intent on keeping themselves to themselves.
“The place where they were staying was quite modest and certainly not hugely luxurious.
“We couldn’t help thinking what the weather might be like in California — but it’s much better to be holidaying here in Britain.”
Last month Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, carried out an official three-day visit to Decon and Cornwall.
During the engagement, they visited St Mary’s Island and Bryher Island in the Isles of Scilly.
