The Duchess of York spoke out about her father Major Ronald Ferguson, who wrote ‘The Galloping Major: My Life in Singular Times’, published in 1994. Sarah shared her experiences in a rare in-depth interview from Royal Lodge, Windsor.

In his tell-all, Major Ferguson wrote about his family’s struggles with the royals.

In 1988 a tabloid newspaper printed a sensational story about his membership of the Wigmore Club, a health club, which allegedly offered a la carte sexual services to members.

He maintained he did not use the club for sexual purposes, but was not re-elected to his post as deputy chairman of the Guards Polo Club.

In 1993, Major Ferguson was in trouble over his connection with Lesley Player, a woman with whom he had organised a ladies’ international polo tournament, and his position as polo manager to Prince Philip was “abruptly terminated in a letter to me from his private secretary”.

In his book, published after Sarah and Prince Andrew divorced, Major Ferguson wrote: “The impression was that [Prince Philip] had been advised to perform a royal version of ethnic cleansing by getting rid of the Ferguson family from his circle.”

In her interview, Sarah also mentioned she does not celebrate the fall of Mazher Mahmood, News of the World journalist.

In 2010 and disguised as a sheikh, he caught the Duchess on camera promising access to Andrew in exchange for £500,000.

Speaking to Town & Country, Sarah shares she once considered suing Mr Mahmood, but did not carry on with legal proceedings,

She told the website: “One day I got up and thought, (Nelson) Mandela forgave his persecutors; surely I can forgive and move forward.”

Princess Eugenie praised her mother in the interview, saying Sarah “empowered” her and Princess Beatrice.

She said: “My childhood and adult life have been made better by the spontaneity of my mother.

“She has managed to always give us the most fun and incredible upbringing.

“No is not a word in her language, so whenever we have had a conundrum, Mum is able to empower us to see it out the other side.”

It comes as Sarah prepares to release her first novel, ‘Her Heart for a Compass’, based the historical romance on the life of her own great-great aunt, Lady Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott.

She told People magazine: “I wanted to write a novel for years and years and was searching for the right story.

“I was looking into my family history and I was struck by the fact that we shared a name: Margaret is my middle name. Since very little more information was easily found about her, it seemed she would be an ideal vehicle for me to weave my story around.”

Per Variety, the Duchess is working on a script treatment for her historical novel, Her Heart For A Compass, and is in conversation with streaming platforms.
