The annual fundraising event usually takes place on the first Monday of May. However, this year’s Met Gala has been postponed to September due to the pandemic.

Last year’s ball was completely cancelled, but the Metropolitan Museum of Art has said that 2021’s “more intimate version” will be better than ever.

The Princess of Wales famously attended the Met Gala in 1996.

Diana walked down the red carpet in an iconic Christian Dior navy slip dress.

The princess also wore her legendary pearl and sapphire choker necklace, which she famously wore when dancing with John Travolta at the White House in 1985.

She explained that William was upset by the media attention Diana attracted during his parents’ public divorce.

In Ms Nicholl’s 2010 biography ‘William and Harry’, the royal expert spoke to William’s childhood friend Kitty Dimbleby, who was close to the young royal.

She said: “I do remember William being distracted by what was going on at home.

“At the time there was a lot in the newspapers about Charles and Diana’s marriage being in trouble.”

She added: “William told me, ‘Papa never embarrasses me but Mummy sometimes does.'”
