Prince William’s Scotland speech was ‘eyebrow raising’ amid Harry’s recent Palace ‘attack’

The Duke of Cambridge said Scotland is the source of his happiest and saddest memories during a speech at the weekend. William explained how he was at the Queen’s Balmoral home in 1997 when he was told of his mother’s death. But he also explained how Scotland was where he first met his wife Kate Middleton almost 20 years ago at St Andrews University.

William also described how his childhood was “full of holidays having fun” in Scotland.

But royal expert Daniela Elser suggested that William’s comments were a “dig” at his brother after Harry’s “latest Palace attack”.

The Duke of Sussex spoke extensively about his struggles with mental health in the series, The Me You Can’t See, with co-presenter Oprah Winfrey.

Harry described how he and Meghan Markle felt “completely helpless” as royals, alleging they were met with “total silence or total neglect” whenever they asked for help.

“My childhood was full of holidays having fun in the fresh air, swimming in lochs, family barbecues with my grandfather in command, and yes the odd midge.”

Ms Elser claimed William’s portrayal of his childhood “stands in total defiant contrast to his brother Prince Harry’s recent outpourings about his childhood which have painted growing up in the bosom of the crown as a brutal, emotionally scarring experience”.

In the Apple TV show, Harry described how his father Prince Charles told him that he had suffered and his sons would suffer too.

Harry said: “My father used to say to me when I was younger, he used to say to both William and I, ‘Well it was like that for me so it’s going to be like that for you’.

“That doesn’t make sense. Just because you suffered doesn’t mean that your kids have to suffer, in fact quite the opposite – if you suffered, do everything you can to make sure that whatever negative experiences you had, that you can make it right for your kids.”
