William and Kate first crossed paths at St Andrew’s University 20 years ago, in 2001, when both were enrolled as students. They became friends quickly, sharing a student house during their second year, and later became romantically involved.
The Duke and Duchess returned to St Andrews on Tuesday where they ate at Forgan’s, a popular local restaurant.
Speaking to PEOPLE Marc, the restaurant’s manager, said other patrons respected the couple’s privacy.
He said: “When word went around, a crowd gathered at the front, but as far as inside was concerned it was quiet for them. People left them alone.
“There was no pomp and circumstance or fanfare.”
Forgan’s, based in a converted butchers warehouse, hadn’t opened when the Cambridges’ were studying at St Andrews.
However Marc suggested it might have been recommended to Kate by a university friend.
He noted claimed the restaurant has become very popular with a society the Duchess used to be part of.
On Wednesday they joined six teenage carers to try out land yacht racing along St Andrews’ West Sands beach.

Kate pulled closer to William at one point shouting “I’m catching you!” whilst laughing.
The future king went on to praise they young carers for the work they’ve been undertaking.
He said: “You guys do really well.
“You should be very proud of yourselves, guys.”
On Saturday William spoke of his close personal attachment to Scotland whilst addressing the Church of Scotland’s general assembly in Edinburgh.
The prince stated: “The connection I feel to Scotland will forever run deep.
“I was in Balmoral when I was told that my mother had died.
“Still in shock, I found sanctuary in the service at Crathie Kirk that very morning and in the dark days of grief that followed I found comfort and solace in the Scottish outdoors.
“Alongside this painful memory is one of great joy because it was here in Scotland, 20 years ago this year, that I first met Catherine.
“Needless to say the town where you meet your future wife holds a very special place in your heart.”
