The Twitter user – who has an EU flag, #FBPE and #Rejoin in their name – made a rallying cry for Denmark to triumph in the match at Wembley tonight. They said: “Now all hopes on Denmark.”

However, the tweet massively backfired after the Remainer shared an emoji of Norway’s flag instead of Denmark’s at the end of the post – prompting hundreds of replies.

One Twitter user said: “FBPE folks support Denmark by showing the Norwegian flag. Hopeless.”

Another asked: “Why? What did the England football team do to you?

“Did you ever consider that some of them might have voted remain?”

A third commented: “It’s so childish wishing defeat on our national football team because a vote or 3 didn’t go your way.”

Another mocked: “Bitter bitter bitter. And the bottom of the class in Geography.”

A fifth said: “Great work from such an avid fan of all things Europe.

Couldn’t have made that one up. Congratulations.”

Tens of millions are expected to watch the match on ITV.

Victory for England will see the Three Lions in their first major final since the 1966 World Cup.

Football fans are expected to get through nearly 10 million pints in pubs and beer gardens on Wednesday.

Prince William, who is president of the Football Association, will be among those inside the ground to watch the match.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged the England team on, saying: “Gareth Southgate and the England squad have done the nation proud in the Euros, and tonight we will all be wishing them the best of luck in getting to the final. Bring it home!”

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer added: “Gareth Southgate and the squad will have the whole nation behind them tonight.

“Both on and off the pitch, they have shown the best of England.

“There’s been only one song featured in our house since Saturday – it’s coming home.”

Italy awaits the winners of Wednesday’s match following a semi-final victory against Spain on Tuesday in which they triumphed on penalties when the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
