Weather forecasters have covered dozens of new areas with a second batch of warnings today. Two vast areas in the north will see thunderstorms as south of the border fights warnings for floods and lightning storms. The forecast has ushered in a washout weekend that could upend people’s best laid plans.
The new areas covered by the Met Office are further north than those targeted yesterday.
Northern Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England will see thunderstorms and heavy rain.
The warning reads: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to break out from late morning on Sunday, perhaps becoming quite widespread during the afternoon.
“Some places will miss the worst of these, but where they do occur, 20 to 30 mm rain could fall in a short space of time leading to some surface water flooding.
“Lightning and hail will be additional hazards. Showers and thunderstorms will only slowly ease during the evening and some could persist well into the night.”
