Sir David was speaking to Sky News on a day when the total number of COVID-19 cases in the UK rose by 27,125. However, he feared things were likely to get significantly worse.
He explained: “I am not sure there any positives to take. Allowing people to come into us for three weeks from India after we knew about this new variant was a very very big mistake.
“I am going to say, yes we are at around 28,000 a day now, which is equivalent to the peak in October, November last year.
“I think what we are looking at therefore is a doubling period every nine days.”
“Let me just suggest if we had doubling every nine days till the 19th of this month when we are meant to see our freedom completely available to us. That would mean over 100,000 cases a day.”
“I honestly don’t think there I say reason why it should be any less than that.
“Maybe it will only be 80,000 a day.”
