Tottenham appointing Nuno Espirito Santo raises major Harry Kane transfer concern

What will Harry Kane make of that then? It is the obvious thought for Tottenham supporters who fear they may just have seen the last seven years of unprecedented modern success wiped out in a single long-awaited swish of the pen.

After all the England skipper, mood buoyed by scoring his most important ever England goal and dreaming of international glory, will have had his St George’s Park bubble pricked by such seismic news.

It was almost as though Levy saw Kane’s insistence that he would not be considering his future during the European Championship as some sort of challenge.

Last season, Kane was directly involved in 37 goals – 23 he scored himself and he also weighed in with 14 assists.

The Wolves team of Nuno Espirito Santo managed just 36 goals between them.

Having first made the mistake of ditching Mauricio Pochettino, the best thing that ever happened to Daniel Levy, he compounded it by appointing Jose Mourinho, beguiled by his win-at-all-cost mentality.

After watching what that did to the whole ethos of the club in just 18 months, he had the wisdom to end the barbaric genetic experiment with what he would describe as the club’s DNA.

Only to go – eventually – for a clone of the very man he had got rid of.

A counter-attacking football tactician without even the winning charm Mourinho could at least produce when he was on his game.

New managing director Fabio Paratici – who seems to have masterminded this move despite being appointed to start work on Thursday – is the Portuguese’s major cheerleader.

“You only have to look at Nuno’s time at Wolves to see his ability to take a group of players and implement an adaptive style that brings success and allows players to develop and thrive,” he said.

Now they have one of the best training facilities in the game and arguably the best stadium. Quite brazenly, Levy considered them one of the elite clubs in the world when jumping into bed with European Super League.

So will Kane be persuaded to give Levy one more chance to show him that he can fulfil his ambitions to win silverware at Tottenham?

“When you have a squad with quality and talent, we want to make the fans proud and enjoy,” Nuno said. “It’s an enormous pleasure and honour to be here, there’s joy and I’m happy and looking forward to starting work.

“We don’t have any days to lose and we must start working immediately as pre-season starts in a few days.”

It does not sound as though silverware is even on the horizon any more.
