Dr Naylor added they will mostly stay away from the light so can be found hidden in places such as behind the bed frame.
There are also fewer places for them to hide in hotels which can make them easier to spot than at home.
Those checking for bed bugs should look for black marks on bed sheets.
“Black spots on the sheets are really typical of bed bugs,” the expert stated.
Homeowners should get in touch with the local council or pest control service.
Sheets and clothing should also be washed immediately at 60 degrees for at least 30 minutes.
Freezing affected bedding and clothing can also help reduce the risk.
While insecticides can help, the pests are sometimes resistant to them.
