‘The King of Swing and former Lord Mayor of Unley who opened for Frank Sinatra at Sanctuary Cove has sadly passed away yesterday surrounded by his beautiful loving family,’ Quist’s tribute read.

Hugh’s father performed in public for the last time in March, at a tribute show held in his honour.

His loving son was there to help him on-stage for his swansong in the Swing a Ding Den at Adelaide’s Arkaba Hotel.

‘Denis was the consummate entertainer who lit up every room with his charm and style,’ Quist wrote, noting that the crooner stole the show at his wedding.

Denis’ terminal illness was the primary reason that his son proposed to his boyfriend Kurt Roberts back in Match.

The 35-year-old said that when he found out about his dad’s illness,  ‘I said to Kurt; “If we are going to get married then we should probably do it sooner rather than later.”‘

Wasting little time in getting hitched, the couple have confirmed that they’ll officially tie the knot in Sydney on New Year’s Eve.

Hugh proposed to Kurt during the first night of his dance performance at the Adelaide Fringe Festival earlier this month.

‘I went out and bought a ring and flew his family to be seated in the audience on the night. He had no idea. It was a really amazing moment,’ he gushed.

After proposing, the loved-up pair shared a public embrace and a cheeky kiss before a besotted Hugh ran back on stage and said: ‘I just got engaged!’

A friend of the couple’s shared footage from the magical moment on Instagram, writing: ‘It’s not every day one of your besties proposes to the love of his life so excited for you both xx.’

In a recent interview with the Daily Telegraph, the Packed To The Rafters star recently confirmed he and Kurt, 29, star have shacked up together.

Hugh said the attraction was ‘immediate’ between the two when they locked eyes at a party at a Darlinghurst mansion previously owned by Baz Luhrmann in November.

The actor revealed that he was a little forward with his approach to dating Kurt, so he took a step back and enjoyed courting him in an ‘old school’ romantic way.

‘But I was pretty persistent. I messaged him and he didn’t respond. And then we caught up again with some mutual friends around Christmas and that’s when I realised I just needed to slow down and give him some space.

‘So then I started to get very old-school about the whole thing.

‘There was no rushing. We just went out for dinners and took things very slowly and I did everything by the book because I knew, deep down, that this guy was a keeper,’ he added.

Earlier this month, Kurt, who is the general manager of digital lending at Commonwealth Bank, packed up his stuff and moved into the Hugh’s Bondi apartment.
