The Duke of Sussex revealed the pressures and challenges he faced growing up as a Royal Family member over the course of five episodes of the Apple TV+ documentary `The Me You Can’t See’. The series explores issues of mental health and includes contributions from Lady Gaga and Glenn Close. In one episode, he described how he resorted to drink and drugs to help him deal with the pain of losing his mother, Diana.
Author Omid Scobie told his podcast the Heirpod that Harry’s frank admissions had provided outsiders with an “alarming insight” into the difficulties of surviving Royal Family life.
He said: “He says from 28 to 32 he calls it a nightmare time in his life and as I say drinking, taking drugs, willing to do the things that he could to make him feel less like he was feeling.
“For many, this was also the time where for us watching for many this was the time that Harry was at his best as a royal member […] even as a favourite in the Royal Family for many.
“I think hearing these stories and the details that go on behind the scenes behind palace walls gives us a really alarming insight into just how difficult it is to navigate that landscape of surviving in a very unnatural environment that is of course being a member of the Royal Family.”
In his chat with Oprah, the Duke of Sussex admitted that he was “willing to take drugs” to help block out the pain of losing his mother, Princess Diana.
He recalled a period in his life, between the ages of 28 and 32, when he went through a particularly rough patch.

“I was in fight or flight mode.”
He added: “I was willing to drink, I was willing to take drugs, I was willing to try and do the things that made me feel less like I was feeling.”
The Duke described binge drinking on weekends, recalling how he drank a week’s worth of alcohol in just two days.
