Virgin Media broadband boost: Free speed upgrade for customers on its Voom plans

The newly formed Virgin Media O2 firm is already making some big changes for customers. With Virgin and O2 having joined forces earlier this month, the new telecoms giant has been promising a big boost to its services and it seems the first to benefit will be those who subscribe to Voom plans. This broadband, which is aimed at small businesses, is getting a big boost with Virgin Media O2 confirming that it’s increasing all-important upload speeds for free.

Most people always consider download speeds when buying broadband packages but getting a good upload rate can be just as vital for some users. Virgin says that some customers will see their uploads more than double at no extra charge.

Following the upgrade, upload speeds will start at 20Mbps and reach speeds of 50Mbps on the Voom 500 package. As a comparison, the basic M100 consumer bundle only offer upload speeds at a rate of just 10Mbps.

Speaking about the boost, Jo Bertram, Managing Director, Business & Wholesale at Virgin Media O2, said: “We’re supercharging business broadband with a completely free upgrade that will help SMEs bounce back from the pandemic.

“After a very challenging year, connectivity has been core to survival for many small businesses, with most uploading and downloading more than ever before. As part of our mission to upgrade the UK we want to help get our nation’s entrepreneurs back on their feet, starting with a free digital boost.”

Along with this upgrade, Virgin Media O2, is promising some serious investment across its combined infrastructure and it seems home broadband customers could be next to see the changes. Until now, Virgin has only offered its blisteringly quick 1Gbps speeds to a limited number of users but that’s all about change.

According to an update to celebrate the two companies joining forces, Virgin says that it will deliver these ultra-fast speeds to more people soon.

“Virgin Media O2 is already the nation’s largest gigabit broadband operator and will deliver these speeds across our entire network by the end of the year,” the company said in a post on its website.

Virgin Media O2 also says it will bring together next-generation gigabit broadband and 5G services while expanding its network reach across the country.

The new company has committed to invest at least £10bn over the next 5 years in the UK.

Virgin Media O2’s CEO Lutz Schüler has set out a vision to ‘upgrade the UK’ through investment in fibre and 5G infrastructure, innovation, and a seamless mix of the best products and services in the market.
