Mercedes boss Toto Wolff says he regrets getting into a war of words with Christian Horner after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after his ‘rude’ comments in Baku. Tensions between the two teams have once again skyrocketed after Red Bull extended their lead in the standings by 37 points with Max Verstappen’s win in France.
Red Bull have now won three races on the bounce for the first time since 2013, before the turbo-hybrid era, as Verstappen swept past Lewis Hamilton on the penultimate lap to seal victory in Paul Ricard and extend his lead at the top of the driver standings to 12 points.
But the battle has extended to Hamilton and Verstappen’s bosses, with Wolff and Horner exchanging heated words across race weekends.
In the midst of the legality of Red Bull’s rear ‘flexi-wing,’ Horner suggested that the Austrian ‘kept his mouth shut’ with Wolff responding that Horner was a ‘windbag’ who should be more humble ahead of a long season.
Horner then hit back saying Wolff shouldn’t be ‘roasting his team’ so publicly after a torrid few weekends for the seven-time champions.

Mercedes have been pushed to their limit this season, the first real challenge we’ve seen since the start of the turbo-hybrid era.
And Wolff admitted this alone is a new challenge for the team, who have won seven championships on the bounce.
