Fruit flies can be a real nuisance in your home. But with a few simple tricks, you can keep them at bay and avoid an infestation. These tiny pests are just an irritant and often swarm homes during the late summer and autumn when the weather cools. Express.co.uk has compiled a guide to explain how to get rid of fruit flies.

Fruit flies are common household pests that infiltrate your home.

These creatures are around 1/10 to ⅕ inch long and typically have red eyes.

They also have yellow-brown bodies and black rings around their abdomens.

The fruit fly belongs to the Drosophila genus and also goes by the names of vinegar flies, pomace flies and wine flies.

    Clean your home thoroughly

If you have cleaned the source of the problem, you should also try to clean other areas to ensure you are not attracting them into your home.

You should check the drain in your kitchen sink because if it is clogged and in need of thorough cleaning, it may be enticing to fruit flies.

These pests like warm and damp spots which means drains are often very appealing to them.

Fruit flies also like bins and have been known to lay eggs in these containers – so make sure to clean your bin thoroughly, ensuring they are completely dry before you use them again.

    Create a vinegar trap

You can also eliminate fruit flies using vinegar, sugar, water and some washing up liquid.

For this method, fill a disposable container with water and add a few tablespoons of vinegar and sugar and then stir.

Then add a few drops of washing up liquid to the solution and stir it.

Place the container where the insects congregate and allow them to visit the solution.

They should drown when they reach the water.
