It had been claimed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex introduced their daughter to the monarch in a video call as soon as they returned home from the hospital after her birth. An insider told US magazine People that Harry and Meghan “were very excited and couldn’t wait to share that their daughter arrived”.

But now a palace source has insisted there was no video call between the Queen and her great-granddaughter.

And the Mail on Sunday reported that the palace is ditching its “never complain, never explain” policy and will not remain silent in the face of “mistruths”.

It comes after conflicting reports over whether Harry and Meghan asked Her Majesty about naming their baby Lilibet, which was the monarch’s childhood family nickname.

The source told the newspaper: “No video call has taken place.

“Friends of the Sussexes appear to have given misleading briefings to journalists about what the Queen had said and that took the whole thing over the edge.

“The palace couldn’t deny the story that this was a mistruth.”

Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, a younger sister for the Sussexes’ two-year-old son Archie, was born earlier this month at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California.

Harry, who is sixth in line to the throne, and former actress Meghan are living in a mansion in Montecito after quitting royal duties last year.

Express.co.uk has contacted Buckingham Palace for comment.

Royal author Robert Jobson told GB News: “The problem they’ve had so far is that any conversation with Prince Charles or Prince William it seems to be aired on US TV first and the whole thing is public.

“Until there is an element of trust between all of these characters, I can’t see how they can go forward.

“We’ve had this row this week with the BBC and legal letters for a story that was true.”
