“Maybe one of the mistakes that I made was like playing Newport [after Wimbledon]. I could have done a training block there to get in the heat and prepare better for the summer. You know, I’ve not really done much since the US Open, like, physically in the gym, or anything, very, very little.

“I’m probably conditioned in some ways for tennis, because my body is responding well to the matches. I know I’ll wake up tomorrow, and I’ll feel okay. But from an endurance perspective, that’s something that I kind of pride myself on, being there right to the end of the matches.”

Although it was a disappointing end to the season for Murray, it was still his best year since 2016 in terms of victories as he managed 26 wins for the year – the most in a single season since he finally reached world No 1 six years ago. The Brit rose from world No 134 back into the top 50 this season and it remains to be seen how much more he can push himself in 2023 after vowing to train harder.
