Hundreds of households across the UK have been hit by an unexpected power outage, according to the UK Power Networks. Data from their site shows that over 700 customers across five regions have been impacted. Norfolk has been the worst hit from these power outages, accounting for a majority of all cases, with the rest of the cases spread out over West Sussex, Greater London, Cambridgeshire, and Essex. In Norfolk, this power cut took place because of a fault that occurred on an underground electricity cable affecting the local area in Norfolk, with UK Power Networks adding that they may have to dig up roads to carry out repairs.

To find out whether there is a power cut in your area, you can use this map from the UK Power Networks, which also gives information on when the power could come back on

One of the cases of a power cut took place in Norwich, where the energy company said: “A fault has occurred on an underground electricity cable affecting the local area, we may have to dig up the road to carry out repairs.”

They added that it was unclear when the power would resume in this area, saying: “We are working to give you a more specific time for when your power will be back on. As soon as we get an update from our engineers we will display a time.”

Meanwhile, dozens of postcodes to the south of Norwich have also faced these power cuts. However, the UK Power Networks estimates that households should see their electricity return between 9:30 and 10:30 am.

For all of these regions, the energy distribution company said: “We’ve had to turn off power in your area so our engineers can safely carry out emergency repairs to the network.”

    The postcodes affected include NR4 6, IP20 9, IP21 4, IP21 5, IP22 2, IP23 7, IP23 8, IP20 9, IP21 4, IP21 5, IP22 2, IP23 7, IP23 8, IP20 9, IP21 4, IP21 5, IP22 2, IP23 7, IP23 8, among others.

Meanwhile, several postcodes in West Suffolk also faced power cuts, which the company blamed on a fault that “occurred on a piece of our electrical equipment which controls the power to your home.”

Fortunately, these households had their electricity restored by 12:31AM today.

Households facing power cuts may be concerned about the food in their fridge and freezer going off. However, on their site, the UK Power Network wrote: “Food should keep for between 4-6 hours in the fridge and 15-24 hours in the freezer if you can avoid opening it.”

If you know someone that needs extra help during the power cut, the company added that they can offer extra assistance to those who need it. “Please call us on 0800 31 63 105 or 105 and we can help.”

In order to prepare for a power cut, they advised households to keep their phone numbers handy, and urged customers who need extra support during a power cut to register for their Priority Services Register,

They also said: “Keep a torch with spare batteries. Take care if using candles. Keep a phone with a cord, as cordless phones don’t work in a power cut

“It’s especially important if you are unwell, less mobile or very young to keep warm. Dress warmly with layers, a hat and gloves and have blankets to hand, so you can keep warm until the power is back on. You can also reduce the heat loss by closing doors on unused rooms and closing your curtains.”

According to poweroutage 649 customers were left with no electricity Norfolk, followed by 57 households West Sussex, and 33 cases in Greater London.

In London, households across the city were hit by power cuts, including in Paddington, Wembley, Lewisham, and Morden. However, all of these have had their power restored overnight.

Meanwhile, a number of postcodes in Crawley have also faced blackouts, with 34 households still without their lights on due to a fault that “occurred on a piece of our electrical equipment which controls the power to your home.”

However, the company believes that all of these places should have their electricity restored between 9:30 and 11:00 am today.
