Charles Leclerc has destroyed his Ferrari after a heavy accident in second practice for the Mexican Grand Prix. The Ferrari star lost control through the quick turn seven after clipping the entry kerb.

The contact was enough to force the Ferrari driver off before he slammed into the tyre barrier. The Mongegasque was okay after the incident but suffered heavy damage to the rear of his car a day before qualifying.

Moments after the accident, Leclerc was asked by his race engineer whether he was alright. The 25-year-old replied: “Yeah yeah yeah. Just not the car.”

Sky Sports host Ted Kravitz revealed Leclerc didn;t look particularly happy after the accident. He also claimed the incident could have a serious effect on his weekend with Ferrari engineers yet to determine the extent of the damage.

Martin Brundle, who was trackside at the scene of the accident, confirmed Leclerc’s car had been badly damaged in the shunt. He said: “The car’s just heading off on the track. The rear wheels are obviously very very badly out of shape. Back of the car took an impact.

“As Paul [Di Resta] said that will be a very very late night in terms of getting that Ferrari back together.”
