Explaining his decision to reprise Ronaldo, Ten Hag told BT Sport: “We have a trio with Cristiano [Ronaldo], with Antony and Garnacho who have the qualities to create, to dribble, that’s what is expected of them, to create chances and goals.”
The Dutchman added: “He doesn’t have to convince me [off the pitch], he has to convince me on the pitch. He is an important part of the squad and we have to play a role in all competitions. Today we need goals, we have to win, we want to be number one in the pool.”
Ronaldo has endured a frustrating second season back at United, with Ten Hag largely using the striker as a substitute. The Red Devils icon allegedly refused to be used as a sub in last week’s win against Spurs, prompting him to storm down the tunnel and out of the stadium before full-time.
