Jeremy Hunt is set to delay next week’s Budget, a senior minister hinted this morning. Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said he did not have a “specific confirmation” on the date of the much-anticipated statement and also suggested some of the party’s 2019 manifesto commitments may be scrapped.
The Foreign Secretary said new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who took up the post yesterday, “will want to take some time to work on the detail” before giving his Chancellor to go-ahead.
He added: “We know it needs to come soon. We know people want certainty.
“We know people want a clearer idea of the Government’s plans.”
A delay is likely to do little to ease the financial markets which have rallied in recent days.

“But protecting the vulnerable — and people’s jobs, mortgages and bills — will be at the front of our minds as we work to restore stability, confidence and long-term growth.”
Yesterday Mr Sunak indicated he would govern based on the Conservative Party’s 2019 manifesto which rules out tax rises and promised to stick to the state pension triple lock.
However, this morning Mr Cleverly suggested some of the pledges made at the last election may be ditched.
Warning the Government must make “dynamic decisions”, he told Sky News: “You can’t set out a manifesto and assume that nothing significant is going to happen in the four or five years of a parliament.
“There was no global pandemic in the 2019 manifesto. There was no invasion of Ukraine in the 2019 manifesto.
“We have got to respond to the world as we find it, not the one we wish it to be.”
