Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag may have already promised the captaincy to Bruno Fernandes despite skipper Harry Maguire still being at the club. In the England man’s absence through injury, the playmaker has stepped up and worn the armband and could be set to retain the role full-time following a believed private conversation with the Dutch coach.
There were calls for Ten Hag to remove Maguire as captain when he took charge at the beginning of the summer, but resisted the temptation and publicly backed the centre-back. However, due to a lack of form and injuries, the skipper has found himself on the fringes of the squad with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane preferred in the heart of the defence, while Victor Lindelof could come into the team ahead of Maguire with the Frenchman a doubt to play before the World Cup due to an injury he picked up against Chelsea.
Former United striker Dwight Yorke believes that Fernandes has already been promised the captaincy going forward, however, after speaking with Ten Hag. “Before he [Fernandes] was the stand-in captain, which wasn’t a problem,” Yorke told Lord Ping.
“I think with the Maguire scenario, looking from the outside in at the club without knowing all the details, I think he’s been told he’s going to be the captain going forward. When a manager tells you something like that, then that weight comes off.
