Before the race in the US, Verstappen insisted that he was not interested in the record. “I know the opportunity is there and I know we have a fast car, but I don’t look so much at statistics because you can’t compare them anyway,” he said.
There were fewer races in the eras where Schumacher and Vettel were winning, making it an easier feat for someone of the newer generation to be able to match and possibly break the records from previous years.
However with both the Drivers’ Championship and the Constructors’ Championship already won by Verstappen and Red Bull respectively with three races remaining, one of the storylines still to play out is whether Verstappen can break the record and deny Hamilton a 2022 victory.
