Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has slammed his Democrat rival Charlie Crist, calling him a “worn-out old donkey”, during their gubernatorial debate on Monday night. Mr DeSantis also repeatedly refused to declare whether he will see out a full term as Governor as rumours continue to swirl that he will seek the Republican nomination for President in 2024.
The debate comes as a Florida Atlantic University poll found that 51 per cent of voters supported Mr DeSantis, while 40 per cent supported Mr Crist.
Mr DeSantis said during the debate: “The only worn-out old donkey I’m looking to put out to pasture is Charlie Crist.”
Mr Crist replied: “We know you like to bully people, I can take it.”
Mid-term elections are set to take place on November 8, with President Joe Biden vowing to protect reproductive rights across the US.
If the GOP wins control of Congress, there are fears amongst Democrats they may push forward further abortion bans.
It is thought that Ron DeSantis may even seek to almost completely ban abortion in Florida, with no exceptions for victims of rape and incest.
As the debate in Florida closed, Mr DeSantis called on his supporters for help
He said: “We’ve accomplished an awful lot but we’ve only begun to fight.”

He added that the Governor’s focus on potentially running for President means he has taken his eye off the ball in his own state.
The Democrat quipped to his rival: “Ron, you talk about Joe Biden a lot, I understand. You think you’re going to be running against him.
“I can see how you might be getting confused. But you’re running for Governor.”
