Manchester United bounced back from the weekend’s goalless draw with Newcastle to beat Tottenham 2-0 on Wednesday night. Fred and Bruno Fernandes both netted during the showdown at Old Trafford, lifting the fans inside the stadium in the process. And it means Erik ten Hag’s side remain close to the Premier League top four following the result.
Manchester United had gone into their match with Tottenham looking to bounce back from the weekend’s setback against Newcastle.
And they did just that, putting in an energetic and enterprising display as they claimed all three points.
United huffed and puffed in the first half to no avail, regularly testing Hugo Lloris while being unable to get anything past the France international.
But Fred struck in the second half, with his deflected effort enough to trickle into the net, with Fernandes then scoring with around 20 minutes left on the clock to make the result safe.
Express Sport will now take a look at four players who stood taller than the rest on a good night for Ten Hag’s side.

Antony
Another Brazilian player picked by Ten Hag for the match was Antony.
And the former Ajax star was a constant threat throughout the showdown as he continued his positive start to life at Old Trafford.
Antony was unlucky in the first half, seeing a fine curling strike lick the post and trickle out for a goal kick.
He was involved in the build-up to Fred’s goal, showing confidence on the ball as he helped to create an opening – although Jadon Sancho got the assist.
Right now, the 22-year-old certainly looks like £86million well spent.

Bruno Fernandes
Before the game, Bruno Fernandes was asked about his statistics.
The Portugal international’s goals and assists have dropped off over the past year, with some wrongly accusing him of playing badly.
But Fernandes was excellent against Tottenham, with his pressing right from the very beginning setting the tone for what was to follow and his goal helping his team to victory.
Sure, he’s not scoring or assisting as frequently as he used to.
But Fernandes leads by example and United just simply don’t have anyone else like him at their disposal and patience in him, clearly, has been rewarded.

Raphael Varane
While Marcus Rashford also deserves a mention, the fourth player who stood tall was Raphael Varane.
United have had to be patient with the former Real Madrid star following his arrival in the summer transfer window of 2021.
But Varane is well and truly an undroppable figure in the side these days, which is understandable given his showing against Spurs.
Keeping Harry Kane quiet is no easy feat and, yet, the 2018 World Cup winner was able to prevent the England striker from adding to his goal tally.
If he can stay fit, then United’s hopes of a good season will only increase.
