Just Stop Oil activists dragged off main London road as police intervene to end disruption

[ad_1]

The activists were dragged off the road and cuffed after police officers intervened “quickly” to remove the disruption. Twenty-five Just Stop Oil members had rushed onto Cromwell Road around 10:30am BST and stopped traffic as they glued themselves to the ground. Police confirmed 17 of the protesters were later arrested after being removed from the A4 at the junction with Exhibition Road.

Footage has emerged online showing the officers dragging one of the activists to the pavement whilst another protester is loaded on a police van.

Two other officers can then be seen ungluing the demonstrators as media and other officers surround them.

In a statement released after the removal of the Just Stop Oil group, the Met Police said: “Officers have arrested 17 Just Stop Oil protestors at the junction of Cromwell Road and Exhibition Road.

“The group blocked the carriageway with 10 people glued on. Officers responded quickly and the road is now open.

“Four people were arrested nearby earlier for related offences.”

Transport for London was granted an injunction against the climate group on Tuesday after days of disruptions.

Just Stop Oil member Lora Johnson shared footage of the protest before the police’s intervention to outline the organization’s aim.

Ms Johnson said: “I’m here today in civil resistance against the Government, trying to get them to say no to new oil licencing.

“We’re going to be in Downing Street every day from 11 and we will not stop until this corrupt Government say no to new oil lines.”

Ms Johnson was stopped by police earlier last week as she attempted to glue herself to the road near Waterloo Bridge as part of another demonstration by Just Stop Oil.

The organization said its members will be out on the streets to pressure the Government into caving to their demands until the end of October.

A spokesperson for the group said: “We are going to be on the streets until the end of October, and what happens after that is an open question. We don’t have any plans to stop.”

DON’T MISS

Just Stop Oil have been ramping up its actions over recent weeks, with protests regularly scheduled outside Downing Street and disruptive stunts across the capital.

Two members brought Dartford to a standstill for over two days after climbing atop Queen Elizabeth II Bridge and causing local traffic and commuters facing major diversions.

Last week, an activist threw a can of tomato soup at Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers painting at the National Gallery.

She was stopped by police and later released from custody, claiming the move was aimed at grabbing the attention of the public and insisting the painting was not damaged.
