Prince Christian of Denmark celebrated his 17th birthday last week, as the Danish Royal House released a new portrait to celebrate the occasion. They said that the Prince, who is second in line to the throne after his father Crown Prince Frederik, would be marking the day privately with his family.

The royals posted the stylish black and white image on their Instagram page with the caption: “His Royal Highness Prince Christian can celebrate his 17th birthday today.

“Prince Christian celebrates the day privately with the family, and on the occasion of the birthday a new portrait of His Royal Highness is published.”

The credit for the image was simply put as a “friend”.

The royals in Denmark have been through a troubling few weeks as Queen Margrethe, 82, recently announced she was stripping some of her family of their titles.

Her younger son Prince Joachim’s children will from next year no longer be known as prince or princess.

All four of them – Nikolai, 23, Felix, 20, Henrik, 13, and Athena, 10 – will instead be titled His Excellency Count of Monpezat or Her Excellency Countess of Monpezat as of January 1, 2023.

They will maintain their standing as seventh through tenth in the line of succession to the throne.

A few days later Prince Joachim, 53, met his mother for talks.

A spokesperson for the royal household told the Danish press: “It is correct that the Queen and Prince Joachim have spoken together at Fredensborg.

“Everyone agrees to look forward, and as the Queen herself has expressed, she and Prince Joachim want calm to find their way through this situation.”

As the son of the heir, Prince Christian and his siblings Princess Isabella, 15, and 11-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine will keep their royal titles.
