Speaking from prison, Ghislaine Maxwell claimed the infamous photo showing Prince Andrew with Virginia Roberts, now Giuffre, and herself in the background, could be fake. Ms Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison sentence for helping disgraced financier Epstein to abuse women.
In a bid to defend her “dear friend” Prince Andrew, Ms Maxwell said she also believes the photo could be fake, something the Prince has hinted at in the past.
The photo, taken in March 2001, shows Prince Andrew with his arm around Ms Roberts’ waist, with Ms Maxwell to their side.
The photo was taken by Jeffrey Epstein himself and came to become the symbol of Ms Giuffre’s case against the Prince.
In February, Prince Andrew settled his case with Ms Giuffre agreeing to pay a financial settlement in the region of £12million.
The Duke of York has always denied the allegations brought against him and continues to do so as the settlement was not an admission of wrongdoing.
Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, Ms Maxwell said: “At this time, I no longer believe that to be a true image, and I don’t believe that it is what it appears to be.”
She added: “There are so many things that are wrong with it,’ she says. ‘As soon as my appeal is over, I will be very happy to discuss it with you.”
In 2015 she told high profile US lawyer Alan Dershowitz she believed the photo “looks real”.
She now says: “‘If you see a photograph and it’s a photograph of you in your home, and someone says to you, ‘Is that a picture of you?’ you don’t question it.

She told author and filmmaker Daphne Barak in the interview that the concept of innocent until proven guilty did not apply in her criminal trial.
Maxwell said the US media “swamped” her with “appalling press” when she was indicted and unable to speak out, comparing her public persona to the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz.
