'Who is really in charge?!' Kuenssberg confronts Jeremy Hunt over 'staggering' changes

Liz Truss’s economic vision appeared doomed on Sunday, as she sought to stay in power despite an increasingly shaky-looking premiership. New Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, brought in to replace the sacked Kwasi Kwarteng and to restore credibility to Downing Street, spent Saturday effectively trashing the mini-budget and the set of policies that brought Ms Truss to power. BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg questioned if Mr Hunt is “in charge” after he scrapped almost all of the “mistakes” of Ms Truss’ mini budget.

She asked: “It’s quite staggering really, a few weeks into a new Government to hear you sitting here this morning and basically ditching the entire thrust of what the Prime Minister wanted to do with the economy.

“Who is in charge, you or her?”

Mr Hunt replied: “The Prime Minister is in charge.

“I think it’s important that when you talk about ditching things, the biggest element of that mini budget was the energy price guarantee where people’s bills were heading for £6,500.”

The host interjected: “And we’ve heard from her about that on many occasions that will make a difference but her promised tax cuts are now not happening.

“She promised public spending would not be cut and you’re now saying very clearly for reasons you’ve explained that public spending might be cut.

“She has ditched central parts of her agenda, it’s gone.

“It seems you’re setting the direction.”
