Lucy Letby allegedly said “he’s not leaving alive here, is he?” shortly before a baby died, Manchester Crown Court has been told. The prosecution today continued its opening into the case against the former nurse who stands accused of the murders of seven babies and attempted murders of 10 others.

Letby is said to have murdered ‘Child P’, one of triplets, in June 2016.

The defendant is also accused of murdering his brother, ‘Child O’, the day before.

Jurors were today told that Child P suffered an “acute deterioration” before doctors made preparations to move him to another hospital.

Before the transfer, one was said to have been “optimistic” about the baby’s prospects, according to Prosecutor Nick Johnson KC.

Mr Johnson added: “All of a sudden Lucy Letby said to him something like ‘he’s not leaving alive here, is he?’.

The court was told that Child P collapsed and died shortly after this discussion.

The prosecutor commented: “That remark surprised [the doctor] but Lucy Letby’s prediction came true.

“After all, she knew what she had done to him and therefore she knew what was likely to happen. It is certainly what she intended because it was something she had done to so many other children.”

Jurors were also told that a coroner recorded the death of Child P as “prematurity”.

The prosecution added that independent experts said the most likely cause was air injected into his stomach which compromised his breathing.

Letby denied causing the child any deliberate harm.

She has also denied the other 22 charges levelled against her concerning 17 babies.

    More to follow.
